We welcomed Miss Money-Penny, a dear friend's first dairy cow. She and a trio of bull calves arrived during the first week of May and the kids were thrilled to get to know her. She's such a friendly, gentle cow!

Isaac's kindergarten class took a trip to the Columbus Zoo on May 11th. It was a cool, rainy morning, but we enjoyed our afternoon thoroughly! Here's Isaac, aping for the camera.

The Columbus Zoo has an amazing hands-on habitat display. There's nothing like 5 foot toadstools to put things into perspective.

We all took a ride on the big carousel. I remember riding on this as a little girl when my aunt and uncle took me to the zoo.

The hot, dry weather meant it was planting season. We watched the farmer plant the fields on 3 sides of the house. This year is a 'soy year', so that means we can grow sweet corn! Yes!

The kids colored a homemade Happy Birthday sign for Jeff's surprise party. I added the '40', just for good measure :)

All the family was in on the surprise. Here's Jeff, just as he figured out that the plans to go to Olive Garden for dinner were a big sham and that we had duped him!
And finally, here he is taking the "Old Guy Oath," pledging to drive 3 miles a day with his turn signal on and call everyone younger than him "dumb punks".

After a rainy spell that kept us cooped up for a few days, we took the kids to a local lake to build sand castles. I don't like the idea of them playing in the water, but the sand appears clean enough to spend an afternoon building castles.

And finally, the greatest tag sale find....EVER. It's a construction kit that consists of loops, swoops, gears, flippers, S-curves, whirlpools and marbles. The fact it contains 150 little pieces was unnerving at first, but I must admit, it's the coolest toy ever!

Mid-May brought some unseasonably warm weather with highs in the 90's. Gotta love that Ohio weather! So we brought out the swimsuits and the wading pool and the kids spent a balmy afternoon splashing around in the backyard.
