It's sort of hard to say Sue. There ended up being a 2 hour standoff and another deputy from a local dept was shot as well. I expect we'll hear more in the next day or two.
It sounded like just part of the job unfortunately. Sad to think a mom can go to work and not come home. My brother has a barber shop just up the road from there. I always thought things like that didn't happen around here. :o( A sad reminder to those of us with law enforcement family members of how dangerous the job really is.
One of the talk jocks was discussing this during my drive home last night...
Apparently this is a _repeat_ of the shooter's actions about 7 years ago. He killed someone then as well, was tried, found not guilty by reason of insanity, placed in a half-way house and then freed. Apparently it was even the same situation - that is, a trailer, him inside and shooting people outside.
Makes you wonder about the definition of insanity and who _is_. This guy may indeed not be morally responsible for his actions - but the society that does nothing to stop his actions?? Now _that's_ insanity!
That's what we're hearing too, Sue. He fired shots at a cop 9 years ago and spent 5 years in an asylum. Then he was in trouble a couple years ago, threatening a kid with a knife. My husband said he was released from the asylum on grounds that he registered in some way with local authorities (I don't know if that means cops or mental health folks). There should have been red flags somewhere. Anyway, my church is holding the viewing and funeral as we're the largest location in town short of renting out the local college.
