Call Me Combative

Hope you had a great weekend.  Mine was.....weird.

We had a great Veteran's breakfast Friday morning.  Let me tell you, the gym of our little country school was packed with local veterans.  There was singing, feasting and my little man's Cub Scout pack acted as the Honor Guard and presented the Colors.  Which still brings a lump to my throat.

After we left the breakfast, the Mr. and I went to a local grand opening of a small sporting goods shop.  Nice place.  That morning, the place was full of Veterans, most of them elderly and in still in their uniforms, having just left local ceremonies.  When we went to check out, the gal gave us our total and I stopped her and asked if she neglected to give Jeff his veteran's discount.

"I don't think we do that," she said.

Thud.

"You're telling me that you opened on Veteran's Day, the place is crawling with old men who served and you don't give them a discount?  Manager, please."

I don't know what they did after we left, but while I stood there, they gave discounts.

So later that night, we went out to eat.  I won't disclose where...but let's just say it's a nationwide chain.  When I asked the waitress about their Veteran's Day promotion, she was a little embarrassed.
"If you buy a pancake, we donate a dime to the VFW to help returning active-duty soldiers and their families."

"Great. And for your veterans?" I asked.

She blushed.  They used to offer free desserts, but corporate discontinued that promotion.

So for the 90-year-old man sitting at the counter in his USS Arizona hat, having fought his way through the Pacific islands and survived: nothing.

For my "old guy", who spent 10 years as a combat medic, jumping out of Chinooks and C-130's: nothing.

And you know, it's not the pie LOL.  It's the lack of recognition that burns me up.  That old man saw conflict like we can NEVER imagine and he doesn't get so much as a nod from this restaurant;  a restaurant, mind you,  that claims we're all one big happy country family.  Needless to say, I've been burning up the wires between here and said 'corporate'.  Call me combative if you want, but I want them to tremble in anticipation each morning as they open their email, dreading seeing my name in their in-box.

Okay.  Coming down from my soapbox now.

Now, for your viewing pleasure, some sweet photos from the 2011 Veteran's Day Breakfast.

Good for you!!!!!!

Any chance you'll reveal the name of the restaurant chain? I'd like to throw my voice into the email campaign. Does it rhyme with "Sacker Parrel"? "Hob Devans"? "Crapplebees"?

Snort! I wish I could say it was Crapplebees, cuz that just makes me snicker.

Hob Devans.

I recognized Cracker Barrel and Applebee's right away but HOB DEVANS?? Either I'm denser than I thought or we just don't have that particular restaurant in these parts.

Can I have another hint please?

: )

Hoss,
It's Bob Evans. They're huge here in the Midwest/Atlantic states but they made not be too far west yet.

Loved the photos, and so glad that the event was packed.

I hear about the discount, and I'm proud that you are on the phone, and writing, I know that my DH thinks it odd sometimes that I am so quick to write or call and let them know what I think.

I think far to many talk but don't do! So you go girl!

LOVE IT, keep up the good work Andrea. Our troops, young or old deserve a break. If I knew my Dad went out & they didn't give him a small token of appreciation I would want to light a fire under someone too. Good for you!!

I love it! I totally agree that it's not the pie. The total disregard in my opinion is total disrespect for their service. You go girl!

Thanks, Andrea ...I've honestly never heard of them. That makes me feel a little better ...at least I'm not even denser than I thought!

Good for YOU for speaking up for our veterans too! They all deserve far better than they usually get!

LOL...thanks for throwing your weight behind me. I was a touch nervous that maybe I was taking this all too personally. Glad I'm not the only one :)

Now don't get me started on the little American flag table decorations. Made in China. Grrrr. I'll save that rant for another day.

I had a wonderful free meal at our local "trough" on Monday the 14th; the place was packed with veterans and their families. The line went out the door and around the building, but there was no griping, everyone was well-behaved as they waited. The staff was extremely nice and the local JROTC helped cook and seat people.

They will always get my business.

You Go! We don't have that chain down here in Texas, if we did....I'd join your campaign! Your pictures were beautiful....what a blessed family!

Gotta get on 'em for that stuff. Burns me up, too. Good for you for going to corporate on that one, and standing up in person.

"Manager please" is the business equivalent of a shore barrage prepping for the Marine landing!

Good going.
